Big Brother Swimming Pool 2008 – 2009

March 1st, 2010

Deep End Pools have been Channel 4’s swimming pool construction company of choice for the 2008 and 2009 Big Brother swimming pools.

Deep End Pools were chosen for the swimming pool construction due to our flexibility and outt side of the box approach when it comes to swimming pool design.

The 2008 Big Brother 9 Swimming pool was a timber framed design with its main feature being the timber deck that surrounds the pool. The pool was the centre piece of the 2008 series of Big Brother.

Big Brother 10 in 2009 featured a swimming pool that was hidden for the first few weeks of the housemates entering. The swimming pool has a lot of unique design features that were a first for our suppliers as well as us.

Firstly the Big Brother 2010 swimming pool was a  parallelogram that made for some interesting liner fitting.

Secondly the centre of the swimming pools wall around the whole shell were translucent to allow for multi coloured lighting behind the swimming pools walls. This meant that the walls also featured some heavy duty perspex to cope with the pressure of the swimming pools water.

The pool was hidden underneath a blue decking until all housemates were official Big Brother housemates.

Green Swimming Pool Solar Cover

November 25th, 2009

We as a swimming pool service company do everything with in our powers to prevent a swimming pool from turning green. But nowaday’s the term green has taken a more positive meaning when referring to swimming pools.

When we mention making a swimming pool more ‘green’ we refer to making it more energy effiecient and cheaper to run. This can be done by installing a new swimming pool pump that may require less power to run it.

You can install more ‘green’ swimming pool heaters. These can be better for you by having a far better co-effieceny rating if a boiler or you could look into a modern alternative such as an air source heat pump.

The cheapest and by far the most important purchase you can make for your swimming pool is a good quality swimming pool solar cover. A very high amount of wasted heat and chemicals is wasted through evapouration and the sun’s rays being directly onto the swimming pools water. A good solar cover will not help to reduce evapouration but it will help to increase the temperature ofyour swimming pools water.

The newest addition to our solar cover range id the Certikin Suncap 500 GREEN. The cover is green in more ways than one. The first major benefit of this cover over any traditional sollar cover is the disign of the bubble. The bubble is of a lower profile and a bigger surface area. This allows the cover to be hugged down low to the pool with maximum surface in contact with the swimming pools surface.

The green colour may be a bit different but this has a major benefit. The very light green hue allows for maximum penetration of short wavelength solar energy. This energy then radiates within the pool at longer wavelengths. The largerr swimming pool solar cover bubbles allow for better coverage of keeping these waves inside the pool for longer.

These covers have been known to increase swimming pool water temperatures by up to 8*c over not using a swimming pool solar cover.

Closing a pool

September 29th, 2009

Deep End Pools close a large number of pools at the end of the swimming pool season. We have two main methods we use. Drain down methods or the more popular method over the last few seasons has been to leave them running for a few hours a day. Either way you choose you have to follow some basic steps to ensure the best protection of your pool you can over the winter period.

  • Remove matter from pool by vacuuming – Clean the pool using, Certikin maintenance equipment, as much as possible. This will reduce your chances of staining as we mentioned above.
  • Backwash filter for prolonged period until completely clear – If you total shut your pool off in the winter, the debris/ bacteria in the filter will be sat for up to 6 months! So clean it as much as possible.
  • If you are having a drain down winterisation lower pool level 2-4 inches below skimmer mouths but not more than 18 inches below coping stones. Remember if you have a safety cover not to lower you pool too far. So pool does not become damaged by water table.
  • Drain filtration system and exposed pipe work – to minimise the chance of frost damage to your equipment.
  • Drain and empty any chemical in feeders or dosing equipment.
  • Place all plugs in secure place – Such as pump basket.
  • Wrap summer cover and place in storage to reduce chances of damage from the elements.
  • Wash down any automatic pool cleaners and store in plant room.
  • Remove any accessories, e.g. steps, boards, rollers, nets, brushes and store.
  • Isolate electrical supply to pool equipment, spray motors and other devices with a water dispersant.
  • Remove skimmer baskets and store in plant room – To prevent frost damage.
  • Isolate gas supply to boiler, switch off power, and drain safety device.
  • Adjust pH to 7.2 using the required chemical, in our area it would normally be ph-
  • Super chlorinate pool water to 10ppm using shock chemical such as Fi-Clor Superfast Shock.
  • Dose the pool with Winter Algaecide – To prevent algae growth in the pool.
  • We would then thoroughly mix chemicals in pool using our satellite pumps.
  • Half fill some empty chemical containers and float them on pools surface to absorb any frost that forms on the pools surface.
  • Place a float in each skimmer to prevent the skimmer pots cracking
  • Fit and adjust winter cover – Bear in mind that a winter debris cover is your pools single best form of defence over the winter period, so a good quality cover is a must.

    Baracuda X7

    September 21st, 2009

The newest suction cleaner on the market is a baracuda x7. The Baracuda is a suction cleaner working using a Diaphragm – This works in a very similar way to the hammer (Kreepy Krauly) but as the water is sucked through the cleaner a diaphragm pulses which makes the cleaner move.
Most pool cleaners require at least a 3/4 hp pump to give your pool a good clean.

The benefits of a diaphragm is that they are generally a lot quieter than a hammer. They also tend to have a smoother motion around the pool. A diaphragm is easily replaced in the future and a baracuda cleaner is very easy to service with all parts avaliable.

When it comes to thorough cleaning, the X7 delivers a performance advantage where you need it most. Four independent flexible discs move the X7 Quattro beyond traditional mobility, while creating maximum suction and adhesion in tight corners and on the pool surface.

At the heart of every X7 Quattro is the next generation Dura Life Diaphragm: powerful suction, dependable performance. The advanced diaphragm technology in the X7 Quattro is designed with over-molded reinforcement for the ultimate in diaphragm durability.

A heightened level of agility and mobility is achieved through the Tilt Action Rudder and Flex Connect Hose design. In combination, they work to provide comprehensive random surface coverage plus the ability to navigate tight corners and the most stubborn obstacles.
