At Certikin Seminar 2010 introduced a chemical cleaning device to Deep End Pools that is ideal for sanitizing pool areas, pool shells, leisure complexes and school changing rooms.

Sagewash is a hand held spray gun that produces a constant flow of sanitizing Hypochlorous Acid.  It has a screw on, centrally mounted cylindrical container that holds a solid capsule of Calcium Hypochlorite. When a water supply from a standard 12mm hosepipe is attached, the water fills the container, wets the capsule and the dilution is fed to the patented venturi which produces an accurate mixture. This mixture is Hypochlorous Acid, which is a potent disinfectant. The output pH is approximately 7.8 and the free available chlorine concentration (FAC), is controlled at approximately 70ppm. Hypochlorous Acid at this pH is almost neutral and has no negative effects on humans or animals. The sanitized area can be occupied immediately after cleansing without any further rinsing.

The sage wash is easy to hold with its easy to use design. The capsule simply drops into the container and the container is screwed hand tight. Attach the hose, press the trigger and adjust the output nozzle from jet to spray as you wish, to maintain constant coverage.

Sophistication is the keynote of the venturi and its ability to control the concentration of output fluid, so that the Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) is kept at around 780 and the FAC between 70 and 90 ppm depending upon input flow rate. Unlike many disinfecting systems, the Sagewash maintains a constant flow of cleaning fluid for the life of the capsule. A capsule will provide full flow sanitizing for 3.5 hours from new.  The Sagewash is supplied with a tub of capsules. The useage rate is such that this guarantees that the Sagewash is both highly effective and economic to use.

November 2009 was Britain’s wettest November that we have ever had. The average rain fall for the month being 217.4 mm which is almost 100mm over the national average for a month’s rainfall.

Deep End Pools have closed a large number of Swimming Pools at the end of summer 2009. A lot of people now will forget about their swimming pool until spring 2010. This means that a lot of swimming pools will be sitting dormant for around 4 – 6 months. This is a long time for water to sit and do nothing.

You may have had your swimming pool shut down fully. Winter chemicals will have been added and the swimming pools water level will have been dropped. This will have been perfect at the time and set your swimming pool into the winter really well.

For some people the winter shutdown will have been as long as 3 months ago now and it has been hot, cold, sunny and overcast. The mixed combination of rain and sun will have brought fresh algae bloom into the pool and the sun will have stimulated it to grow. If the correct levels of chlorine and algaecide have been added your pool should be well but with some pools they may have used all of the available chlorine in the swimming pool. The rain could also of topped your swimming pool up. Liner swimming pool owners beware as this could have serious consequences.

Deep End Pools, has recently closed in the region of 85% of our customer base pools now, and we turn to how we best prepare these pools to ensure they are trouble free in the spring time gone are the days of close the pool and forget, as in the spring you could have a nasty surprise. So the pool is closed for the winter, winter cover is on system drained down or running on late night timer mode or frost stat that is right? No.

in October the last of the leaves fall, if left in the bottom this could stain your liner, all the pigments form the leaf could leach from the leaf in the cocktail of winter chemicals and cause a stain. So how do fix this?

Well simple remove the cover and either net the main of the leaves away or hire a professional to revac the pool floor.

Water level

we experience wetter periods more rain the pool will fill, diluting the swimming pool winter chemicals and rendering the winter close useless so re- measure the levels re evaluate the water clarity and add the chemicals as needed.

also keep an eye on the pool level in general surprisingly leaks can simply happen for no apparent reason in the winter months so a drop in level could be a sign of a problem call the swimming pool company in straight away, to investigate.

Equipment check

If you’re running a winter timer just to circulate the water please check the pump periodically for leaks and noise, and failure here going unnoticed could be costly if it goes wrong.

Surrounds

Once all the winds have calmed and leaves are down give your pool surround areas a good sweep and clean, keep the surrounds from becoming stained etc.

Ice

please be very careful working next to a partially empty swimming pool in those frosty icy conditions, one slip could be fatal especially if you have lowered the water level too low getting out could prove very difficult, bear this in mind for animals also!

Safety covers

The cover pump must be on! Always very difficult in frosty conditions as they do tend to freeze up and not pump any water so please keep your eye on the pump and ensure the water does clear once melted.

Ok we do not all have the luxury of wondrous indoor swimming pools referred to as the sun seeker compression to the boat world, so us mere mortals with outdoor pool have to ask when do we close the swimming pool down?

well firstly if you’re not a dab hand at swimming pool maintenance and winterisation techniques this is probably a job best left to a swimming pool expert, Deep End Pools however offer a multitude of close services varying from drain downs, to winter call backs.

However the question still arises when is the best time to close your swimming pool?

Well personally Deep End Pools would prefer pools were closed in the month of October, ideally late October very early November as the ambient day time temperature drops in the region of 10 degrees c, the bacteria growth rate within swimming pool water is reducing lessoning the chance of the swimming pool turning green!

Close too early and those winter chemicals could be wasted, close to late and you run the risk of damage being caused to the swimming pool!

Always however consider winter servicing as an option for your swimming pool, as we reach late December all of the leaves should be cleared from the trees and with high winds these often blow under the winter debris cover into the swimming pool, if the leaves are left on the pool floor they can break down and cause a pigment staining to the swimming pool floor! aargghh not really what you want in the spring when opening your swimming pool for that May Bank holiday family get together!

The works above will normally take place at the start of or, in swimming pool season. You use your pool for the summer and now it comes to winterising your swimming pool for autumn / winter 2009. Then you realise you have a winter debris cover with no holes in your brand new swimming pool surround.

If you have not installed a winter debris cover before it can be a very tricky job. The cover will be designed to overlap your pool all the way around to try and seal out the elements as best as possible. The Winter Debris cover will have P-Pins spaced out approximately every 1.2 – 1.5m. These will be attached to a strap which is normal adjustable which allows you to create tension in the covers surface. The key to installing the cover is keeping it square as you work along each side to ensure that you can create a level flat tension across the whole surface of the cover.

You install the P-Pins into the paving by drilling a hole just a little bit bigger than the p-pin. When Deep End Pools install Winter Debris Covers we like to drill the hole with the hole slightly leaning away from the pool. This will allow you to fully tension your Certikin Winter Debris Cover without the worry of the pins pulling each other out of the ground.

Deep End Pools would normally mark out the holes before we start to fit the Winter Debris Cover to ensure that the covers P-Pins are square around the pool surround. Adjust the P-Pins so that you have plenty of future slack to take up on the strap, As a new Winter Debris Cover will break in over its first few winters.

Once you have drilled all you holes and installed the Winter Debris Cover on the pool make sure to keep it tensioned as tight as possible to minimise the amount of debris that will get into your pool over the 2009 winter.

Ok so the leaves are starting to drip from the trees littering our gardens like confetti and you ask yourself why the pool acts like a huge leaf magnet!

You peel back the Deep End pools swimming pool summer cover; to find you pool floor is peppered with leaves! Time to start vacuuming or is it? please be very very careful when vacuuming large amount of leaves from the pool floor especially on an old UK pool, often we store our pool cleaning equipment in a shed so get that out at the ready! Older pipes on in ground pools used to be 1.5″ this often clog on the bends and block every easily! Many new swimming pool installations would carry a 2″ pipe work flow and return to and from the swimming pool, avoid the swimming pool pipe blockage scenario.

now once you have set up your swimming pool cleaning equipment, and there really is no better maintenance equipment available covering all aspects of pool services for both tiled and liner pools than the certikin range of cleaning tools, gently remove as many leaves as possible with the deep leaf net, whilst this may spin many of the leaves up into a frenzy within the swimming pool water this is certainly the 1st direct approach you take first. Reducing the amount of times you potentially have to empty the swimming pool pump basket especially if it is a Sta Rite 52PR pump or old cheap small Hayward pump.

so you have netted to your heart’s content, time to switch to vacuuming usual drill clear all the air from the pump, after having carried out a backwash and empty the pump basket to get a good flow, now approach the leafs very very slowly this final swimming pool service to the pool for the season should take the longest so take care move to fast and you risk picking up to much debris and blocking the line! It could get expensive.

The flow into the vacuum hose should be consistently smooth, if the suction drops empty the pump basket and ensure all is well clear vac head and hose a 9m certikin swivel hose is the best unit available on the market offering a rigid side wall of hose section allowing little room for wall collapse.

Deep End Pools are starting to to get enquiries for Swimming Pool  Winterization for the end 2009 Swimming Pool season.

These enquiries mainly being Beaconsfield, Gerrards Cross, Denham, Iver, Windsor, Maidenhead, Cookham, Henley, High Wycombe, Princes Risbourough and Aylesbury. Mean that we all pretty much come up againest the same elements and problems over the winter months, mainly being harsh frost and to much rain.

At the the start of the 2009 season we had been to a number of pools that were either shut down incorrectly or simply just switched off for the winter closed season. This led to a significant number of underground leaks, pipes split, pumps corroded and boilers cracked from the very harsh 2008/2009 winter months.

This winter is expected to be much the same with temperatures dropping well into the negative figures, which again can lead to more plumbing and equipment issues through the winter months which will lead to a much delayed start to the 2010 swimming season.
