VariTab – The Verdict

August 27th, 2009

Deep End Pools recently became a Bayrol stockist and is getting increasing amounts of interest in the Bayrol VariTab water disinfection system.

Bayrol is by no means a new company to the world of water treatment, established in 1927 in Munich by chemist Heinz Pohl. The company name betrays its Bavarian origins (BAYR) and integrates the quality assured by the Pohl family (OL). The success story began with special chemical products for cleaning and caring for industrial goods. Two of the products created by the company’s founder are still the basis the most varied disinfection and cleaning processes.

The VariTab provides a new dimension in chlorine-based water care. It is the world’s first 2-phase tablet for sand filters. It disinfects and cleans in several stages.

In Phase 1 (blue tablet) there is shock chlorination and the filter is intensively cleaned and disinfected.

Phase 2 (white tablet) works for 10-14 days giving a thorough disinfection. A flocculating agent (clarifer) is released at the same time and the hardness stabiliser it contains also combats lime precipitation.

This especially effective combination of fast and slow dissolving disinfection thus assures double hygiene.

We currently have approx 10 – 20 pools in the local area running this system and we have had a very good response so far. The system is ideal for those looking for minimal effort in maintaining there pool.

VariTab gets the Deep End Pools thumbs up from our experiences and feedback from our customers.

How Many Gallons/Cubic Metres do I have?

August 24th, 2009

Many people are unsure of their own swimming pools capacity.

This can be a big problem when trying to work out dose rates for chemicals and sizing products for your pool. In the tablebelow we give the calculations inboth metric and imperial so it should be of use for people who use ‘old money’ or ‘new money’! (ft) or (m)

Circular Pools

Imperial – diameter (ft) x diameter (ft) x Average Depth (ft) x 4.9 = Gallons

Metric – diameter (m) x diameter (m) x Average Depth (m) x 0.8 = Cubic Metres

Oval Pools

Imperial – Long diameter (ft) x Short diameter (ft) x Average Depth (ft) x 5 = Gallons

Metric - Long diameter (m) x Short diameter (m) x Average Depth (m) x 0.9 = Cubic Metres

Rectangular Pools

Imperial - Length (ft) x Width (ft) x Average Depth (ft) x 6.23 = Gallons

Metric - Length (m) x Width (m) x Average Depth (m)  = Cubic Metres

I hope this is of help for you and in turn this should help you get you dose rates correct for your pool.

Swimming Pool water balance

August 20th, 2009

Having trouble with your pools clarity?

Have lots of chlorine in water but pool still not right?

Your Ph and Alkalinity are just as important as your chlorine reading for getting your pool back into top form.

Alkalinity is the buffer for the Ph.

If the Alkalinity is wrong the pools pH will fluctuate very quickly and it will be very hard to maintain the pH at the correct level of between 7.2 -7.6.

pH will affect the strength of the chlorine
If the Ph (Power Hydrogen) is out of line the effect of the chlorine can have as little as ¼ of the strength as if the ph level is correct. So yes the ph is important.

Chlorine

Chlorine should be kept at a steady level of between 1 – 3 ppm.

Take into account hot weather, high bather load and lots of rain can put your pool water under massive strain to keep crystal clear.

If you are having any troubles with your pool, feel free to call us on 01494 681835.

Please ensure you have performed all of the above first as these steps will cure most pool issues.

Swimming pool Circulation pumps targeted for carbon reduction

August 20th, 2009

The European pump manufacturing sector has been in talks with the EU in developing policies, standards and programmes to make an impact on carbon reduction. The move has been made through the European Association of Pump Manufacturers .Pumps are responsible for some 5% of total electro-motive energy consumption, and the European pump sector is only too aware of the need to make a significant contribution to carbon reduction.

Under the EUP directive the Commission focussed first on high production volume products, identifying glandless circulating pumps up to 2500W and various centrifugal based water pumps as the initial targets.

Europump via its standards and technical commissions formed an energy joint working group, who with the co-operation of the Technical University of Darmstadt formulated carbon savings programmes and standards for all the associated pump types. The work on the circulators has now been completed with new and tough efficiency improvements due to come into force in 2013 and 2015 respectively. The changes will require massive production investment by the pump sector largely due to a technology shift, which will require a move toward permanent magnet motor technology and variable speed controls. At the same time the EU approved new energy targets for the majority of electric motors fitted to pumps.

Europump are continuing to negotiate with the EU on the water pumps, where their ‘house of efficiency’ scheme is expected to be used in the removal of least efficient products. They are also working toward the development of extended product and systems standards, where the potential for significant carbon reductions are best obtained.

The EU have now informed Europump that Swimming Pool pumps are next in-line, and it is likely that the programmes and standards being developed by Europump will be adapted to fit products in this sector.

The time is fast approaching when pumps fitted to swimming pools, like those used in domestic heating systems, will face stringent efficiency design standards, along with the need to adopt extended product control and monitoring equipment, and to be applied to efficient system design.

The British Pump Manufacturers Association have as the UK members of Europump been at the forefront of the European energy programme; providing experts, secretariat, and working group chairmen all overseen by the BPMAs representative on Europump Council, Ken Hall, Managing Director of Calpeda Pumps, who has been the President of Europump for the past two years. The BPMA is also in negotiations with the UK government in respect of the EUP directive and UK specific legislation.

How do I Vac My Pool?

August 19th, 2009

With every pool there comes maintenance.

Deep End Pools can come and service your pool on a weekly basis so you do not have lift a finger just enjoy your pool.

If you do look after your own pool one of the key arts to master is vacuuming your pool.

It is very easy to de-prime your circulation pump if you are not careful.

Follow these simple steps and you should have a clean pool in no time

·         Get your pole, vac head and hose poolside

·         Isolate the necessary line to which you vacuum through(i.e. Skimmer or Vac Point)

·         Connect your vac head to the pole

·         Connect the swivel end of the hose to the vacuum head

·         Drop the vac head into the pool

·         As the hose enters the water systematically push the hose under water to fully clear all air out of the hose

·         Now the vac hose is fully primed either connect to your vacuum point or skimmer

·         Proceed to vacuum your pool in thoroughly ( I recommend dividing your pool into sections or quarters to make it an easier size to handle)

·         Once you are happy with the pools condition disconnect vac hose from the line of suction

·         Lift the head, handle and Hose to pool side and disconnect

·         Neatly pack away hose for next service

·         Return valves to normal operating positions

I always empty the pump basket and backwash the sand filter after vacuuming a pool to ensure the pool is left in tip top condition.

How Much Money Can I Save?

August 13th, 2009

With the current economic climate there is no better time to start making your pool be as efficient and economical as possible.

The first thing to do would to be sure there are no obvious faults, such as covers split, pumps leaking and splits in liners. All of these can lead to wasted water through evaporation, wasted chemicals and wasted heat.

One of the best ways to save money is to install an air source heat pump.

A good air source heat pump Such as a Calorax or Climexel will offer you 4 to 5 times coeffiency rating.

So for every £1 spent on running the heater you are getting back £4/£5 worth of heat.

An air source heat pump can be installed in a short space of time and really begin to start saving you money instantly.

But please BEWARE!

We have heard stories of people telling us that they have been offered heat pumps that will only cost 20p a day to heat their pool upto 28*c.  Please be sure to buy a well sourced and more importantly a well backed product.

For example, a unit such as a Climexel will heat a 35m3 pool upto 27*c for less than £3 a day in the summer months. This im sure you will feel is a very reasonable cost.

For more information on reducing running costs of your pool call 01494 681835 now.

Above Ground Pool Water Balance Guide.

August 12th, 2009

Keeping your small above ground pool fresh and clean can be quite a tricky task. With the varying weather playing with your water balance along with varying bather loads it can be quite confusing.

We have drawn up a basic guide to try and keep you on form:

First Dose

  • Fresh fill pool with clean water
  • Superchlorinate the pools water leaving cover off.
  • Leave the filter running until pools chlorine levels are down to between 1 -3ppm
  • Balance pH levels to between 7.2 – 7.6

Regular Maintenance

  • Test water regularly (1-2 DAYS)
  • Remember different bather loads and weather conditions do play with chemical balances
  • Leave pool for safe time until chemicals are fully mixed ( around 3 hours, always test first)
  • Always read instructions before using any chemical.
  • Mix chemicals seperatly ideally in totally different chemical containers.
  • Filter running a at least 4 hours a day
  • Clean cartridge regulary and replace every 4 weeks
  • Clean debris out of pool as much as possible.

Any problems please call Deep End Pools 01494 681835

Do I need planning permission for my swimming pool?

August 11th, 2009

Many people dream of having their very own pool but are not sure if they require planning permission to construct their pool.

Here is an extract from the SPATA swimming pool guide.

Outdoor Pools, or those housed in a detached building which are for the exclusive enjoyment of the owner of the property and his family will often be treated as a permitted development and no Planning Consent will be required. Building Regulation Constent will be required for any kind of indoor pool. Consent will normally only be required for an  outdoor pool where there may be disturbance to adjascent buildings or drains. A pool located in listed premises or ina conservation area will always require Planning Constent.

You should inform the local water authority that you are building a pool, or ask your contracter to do so.

In the first instance, consult your SPATA contractor for advice and they will be able to advise and help.

If you require a swimming pool constructed call Deep End Pools 01494 681835 sales@deependpools.co.uk
